Farm To School Program
Growing Washington loves on-the-ground programs that make a big change! Over the past several years Growing Washington has supplied over 10 schools in 3 school districts with deliveries of local food. We make this unique cooperation possible by working directly with Nutrition Coordinators, finding out specific products and quantities districts are interested in. Then with our unique direct connections to local farmers, we can find local, in season food that we pick up and deliver directly to the schools!
Last spring, Washington passed Senate Bill 6483 (a.k.a. the Local Farms-Healthy Kids initiative) which, among other things, calls for the revision of food procurement and food contract procedures to facilitate the purchase of Washington grown food by state agencies and institutions with particular emphasis being put on schools. This means that not only is Growing Washington gung-ho about getting fresh, healthy food into the mouths of hungry school kids- so is the government and a ton of other people who helped get the bill passed!
Equipped with so much widespread support, now’s the time to build our Farm to Cafeteria to epic proportions! Read on to find out how you can be part of it.
